All Those Little Deaths

All Those Little Deaths

Choreography and performance by Sara Maurizi

“To put on femininity with a vengeance suggests the power of taking it off.”
Russo, quoted in Albright (2013, p. 213)

Through a series of tableaux vivants, the performer inhabits, distorts, and confronts stereotypes imposed upon the female-presenting body by patriarchal structures. Each pose becomes an act of exaggeration and resistance, revealing femininity as a constructed and performed condition.

The work asks how many parts of ourselves are lost each time we are compelled to embody objectifying roles shaped by the male gaze.
